The Ministry of Energy has awarded oil dealer Gulf Energy the tender to import 160,000 tonnes of crude oil. The firm submitted the lowest bid under the open tender system supervised by the ministry to import Murban crude oil on behalf of the industry. The oil will be processed by the Mombasa-based Kenya Petroleum Refineries Ltd.
Bid documents opened on Tuesday show two crude oil consignments, each of 80,000 metric tonnes, will be imported to produce fuel for local use and for export.
Gulf Energy’s bid of $0.372 per barrel for freight and premium led to the tender award with the first batch expected to arrive at Kipevu Oil Terminal in Mombasa from August 17-18 this year.
Gulf bid $0.411 for the second batch of 80,000 tonnes expected between August 1-3 at Kipevu. Competitor Kenol had bid $0.690 and $0.678 for the first and second batches respectively.
Another oil dealer, Gapco, won the tender to import diesel and jet fuel with a bid of $13.80 and $15.60 per metric tonne respectively.
Consumption
Meanwhile Kenya’s consumption of diesel rose 15.9 per cent to 337,000,000 litres in the first quarter of 2009 despite the global financial crise also affecting the country. Date compiled by the Petroleum Institute of East Africa show diesel use increased to 337,000,000 litres in the period under review from 291,000,000 litres between January to March 2008.
“The crisis affected the economy as aviation fuel sales went down owing to reduced tourist arrivals while the usage of industrial diesel dipped as manufacturing activities of factories slowed,” said Petroleum Institute of East Africa acting general manager, Wanjiku Manyara.
